Kleinmond Historical Precinct

DATE OF COMPLETION: 2012
LOCATION: Harbour Road, Kleinmond
CLIENT: Kleinmond Development Group
PHOTOGRAPHY/IMAGERY CREDIT: Damien Schumann and KLG

This project, a joint appointment between MEYER+VORSTER and KLG Architects, originated from an Urban Design Framework preparedby the consultant team for the Harbour Road area in Kleinmond, Western Cape. The Kleinmond Historical Precinct aimed to establish a location that would become a residential, visitor, business and cultural destination. Drawing inspiration from the historical character of the area, the design includes small scaled shopfronts, varied residential apartments, restaurant cafes and landscaped access to the existing harbour. The development shapes the vision of the port to establish a new accessible public space for new and existing communities to support the surrounding area.

Retaining stone walls form the landscape, connecting the project to the distinctive mountainous-ocean backdrop whilst Industrial steel immateriality and timber detailing translate the project to the harbour’s typical character, adding a modern take on the design’s intentions.
