Situated in the suburbs of Hermanus, House Knutzen is defined by its elongated plot. The building takes on a stable-like typology with single depth rooms running along the edge of the property, looking out onto the main courtyard over a long externa walkway. This is typified with tall vertical timber ventilation slots which open out into the gardens, adding rhythm to the courtyard façade.
Small private courtyards are utilized to ensure natural light and ventilation throughout the spaces. A material palette of ash timber , glass, white plaster and light grey metal add a delicate nature to the house and contrast the stable-like character in a modern twist. This is typified in a seamless glass box overlooking the main courtyard. Carefully designed timber details distinguish the space and are shown off along the external walkway illustrated in the light timber detailing screens and pergola which soften the threshold between the built and the garden. The courtyard is bordered by these timber tectonics and a long natural lap pool stretching across the edge of the site; emphasizing the length of the design.
