House Russel was designed as a family holiday cabin in the coastal town of Betty’s Bay.
The structure elegantly floats above the natural fauna, unifying the landscape with the building’s internal social life to create one continuous flowing space. Walls are made up of large sliding doors and shutters which fold away to eliminate boundaries between inside and outside, continuously re-orientating the user to their natural surrounds. Panoramic mountain and flora views characterize the space’s atmosphere and characterize the internal social spaces. Open living and kitchen spaces flow into each other and extend into the landscape while more private bedrooms are tucked into the secluded end of the building’s typology.
In section, the roof rises up to absorb natural light and the mountain views creating a harmonious space with nature, a perfect family retreat.
